Valerie Kokot-Rebhahn MS, LPC

Hi, I am Val Kokott-Rebhahn,

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Wisconsin; welcome to the Center for Resilience and Healing!

I’ve told many people over the years that finding the right therapist is like shopping for shoes; you have to find the right fit for you.

I love working with kids and teens; they keep me on my toes!  I try my best to keep them on their toes, too!  Working with kids and teens has been a goal of mine since I was a teen because I knew what a need there was, way back then at that time in my life, to have a neutral person to talk to, to seek guidance from, and to receive support from.   With kids, I use a balance of therapeutic play and therapeutic work because they tend to need to be active in all they do.  I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for kids and teens, and tend to use this method of therapy often because unfortunately, many children and teens experience trauma and/or chronic stressors.  With kids and teens, we work together to tackle the “tough stuff,” but also have fun doing so.  I also work with the parents and/or guardians to provide guidance and support as needed, whether through trauma issues of their children, to difficult family relational issues, to behavioral difficulties, etc.  And with teens, we tend to “go with the flow” a little more to help sort through the many difficulties of the adolescent years… and there are many.  Adolescence has always been a tough time, but in today’s world, it’s even tougher.  I use empathy, compassion, and humor to work successfully with teens.  Humor goes a long way for all!

Last, but certainly not least, I also work with adults.  I tend to utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy the most when working with adults.  For those adults who have experienced trauma, no matter what their age was at the time of the trauma, I tend to utilize Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) the most.   With all clients, we work together to determine the best course of action, set the goals, and achieve those goals.

In case you are wondering, I have tended to work with the following issues the most with my clients, both young and old: stress and anxiety, PTSD or trauma, depression, grief and loss, family relational difficulties, and behavioral difficulties with children.  And, my education is as follows: I graduated from Viterbo University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree; I majored in Psychology and minored in Women’s Studies.  I went on to earn a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Counseling and Psychological Services from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2002. I also earned another MA degree with an emphasis in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University in 2013, while working on the path to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) degree; however, that Ph D path ended due to an unexpected “curve ball” being thrown into my life.

To wrap this up, I want to say that everyone needs somebody, some time.  We all go through tough life situations.  I want to be that neutral person that can help you bounce back from life’s adversities and help you to not only survive, but to thrive.  I want to help you reach the ultimate goals of resilience and healing!
